For me as a singer-songwriter I find that poetry and songwriting go hand in hand. With my personal work sometimes a poem becomes a song and always the musical acts that I admire most are always brilliant poets. In some cases I would say that is their main talent and I would give Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan as examples of what I mean. I recently published a hubpage article on my top 10 favourite albums and, tough choice that it was to make, I decided they were all by singer-songwriters. So for me the word comes first and the music second. You can see who I chose and why here: hubpages.com/_uq6h62db2t97/hub/Ten-of-my-favourite-albums

I, too, think that the lyrics frame the song. Why have a high-pitched crescendo when one is not needed?! The best songs begin with excellent words.

couldn't agree more poet first melody comes with the wave of words expressed through the writer's triumphs and misfortune all feed off others
