Leaves of color Leaves of light, Bouncing, whirling On their flight.
Curled in crispness, Bathed with rain, Nestled in shelter Neath the goose’s refrain.
On Winter’s cold breath They do tremble, While merry folk Crouch near fire’s ember.
And lacy white flakes Drift e’er downward, Over notes of St. Nick And the Bard.
They sleep silent, serene Neath their blanket of snow, Their hues frozen As all of us know.
Till the kiss of Spring On merry lips is borne, And the leaves soon emerge, Their edges tattered and torn.
Now brown and quite sodden They reveal their gentle lace, Life’s framework so fragile Bathed in mystery and grace.
Away, I say! To the warm earth return, To shelter and nurture Till the nest the young spurn.
Then come again Sweet leaves of light, To dazzle, to glisten and shine, As frost nips the air With her fingers of white, And memories return, Once more mine.

A wonderful progression of seasons through the fall of leaves and the imagery of inner reflection makes this a truly wonderful introspective piece.
