WITHIN THE DARKNESS
The shadows arise at sun’s passing, Growing monstrous with each waning hour, Within the darkness lurks my fears, Spearing through each tree, every bower.
All manner of fowl creatures abide in the night, Unfurling their wings to fly high, In ebony hues, they frolic and dance, As the moon rises high in the sky.
Demons, devils and old witches, Cackling and screeching most shrill, Making the whole world tremble in fear While the sun’s brother climbs over the hill.
If I pause by the sea, might I be ensnared By tentacles slimy and cold, Dragged down to a watery grave In the jaws of a cuttlefish so bold?
As the cool mists enshroud every valley Concealing all manner of ill, The furry bat’s call pierces the night So high pitched, desperate and shrill.
Fear skates down my spine and I shiver with dread, As the night birds ascend to the skies, Chasing a feast with their sharp tiny jaws, Guided by sound, not their eyes.
But lo! I am watched. Something tracks me, Marks well every foot fall and gasp, So, I turn and race back for my hovel, Feet flying so certain and fast.
I slam the door closed on the night, My heart thundering with fear and dread, As I glance out the panes of my window, They are watching me with deep eyes of red.
‘Tis foolish, these visions macabre, These ridiculous fears mounted high, Still, I think I’d feel safer beneath the covers, Till the sun returns, rising high in the sky.

A very good dark write. Eerie. Good imagery, flow, rhyme and tone. Nice depth of feeling. Vivid descriptives. Your words took me to that very scary place. Good word choice, alliteration and assonance.
Nice use of personification "While the sun’s brother climbs over the hill". Well penned and a most enjoyable read.
