Whenever I get a case of writer's block, I break away from my computer, put down my pen and paper and sing myself right out of the room! The lyrics of the songs engender different images in my mind, freeing me from that awkward place in which I found myself, so that I may revel in a totally different environment. When I sing, I become Josh Groban or Celine Dion, wailing my heart out on a brightly lit stage. I am Luciano Pavarotti, welcoming all fellow singers into the arms of music. And I am the mournful cry of the bagpipes or the dulcet tones of Clannad on a misty Scottish morning. I do not write well under stress and what could be more stressful than writer's block to a poet or author?! When I calm down, the words flow once again. This may not work for everyone, but it works for me every time!

I love it! Singing is definitely a great release and I can see you becoming Celine so vividly! lol - I do this same thing, while I'm in the car - I sure do belt it out and yes, it is so freeing!
I also find that picking up a book of poetry and reading the verse of other poets gives me a new muse. I find a new word or phrase that I hadn't thought of before and it gives me new food for thought. I find reading to be a wonderful way of getting out of the rut of a block as well.
Creativity does become stifled under stress and for me, I find that the words that come out during trying times lack luster and appeal.
Thank you for sharing these great ideas Ann!

I get away from it. I go out for a walk, garden, decorate...anything that takes my mind off it. Of course, I listen to music almost 24/7 (seriously, I do) so I associate music with writing.
Sometimes, I just pick up a thesaurus or dictionary and thumb through it - seeing unusual words or being reminded of a word I rarely use will put me back on track. Sometimes it spawns a new piece - like Daniel, working on something different will help. Especially if I'm working on my novel and hit a rough spot - I'll give a couple of poems a go. It's enough to take my mind off it without taking me too far away from it!

i unfortunately suffer from..".the only time I can write is when i am depressed mode" I feel I am a competent writer but it kind of is sad I can only create when I am sad and blue...any idea what I can do to write when I am happy...which is most of the time lol otherwise I'd be insane and have a multitude of books out there...

Ann, I can understand how that works and in fact I just posted a thread about writing on a different subject or in a different mode of expression as the answer to writer's block!
Michael, I can also understand what you are saying and would agree that if I was feeling very happy the chances are poetry and songs would not be flowing from my pen because I would more likely be enjoying life and not bothered about writing down my feelings. This is why much great poetry and songwriting and literature in general is turned out by people with problems. It is a sort of therapy - a singing the blues but in writing!
